Last weekend our own Mike Warren, managed to place 2nd in the XC and 1st in the downhill – good for the overall win and World Champion title! We’ll let Mike recap the weekend in his own words…
“This past weekend saw Dan, Charles, Daniel and myself all head up to Downieville for the all mtn Classic. We got into town around 5pm on Friday and went to the top of the hill for a preview of the downhill course and so both Daniels could feel out their knee ailments. The practice run went good but Daniel C. Decided his knee was not going to cooperate for the rigors of this race, bummer.
We stayed in a sweet cabin right across the street from the start of the XC race in Sierra City. Super convenient just wake up and ride to the start!
The race starts with a 8 mile 3000′ climb and I’m not sure why but I felt pretty strong and was the first guy in my class to the top. The next 8 miles are a mix of rolling fire road and single track even though I hit a rough spot with my legs not wanting to go, I still found myself in front. The next ten miles are mostly single track downhill and super technical. With about five miles to go I noticed a dude in my class right behind me! Shit! I dropped him on the first downhill then hit the little climb that leads to the third divide then wouldn’t you know it the legs said fu@k you and started to cramp! No, no, no, I said to myself as I limped to the top. Cresting the top still in front I thought I was in the clear, Wrong. The dude caught me on the hill and sat on my wheel all the way until about a mile from the finish where he flew by me on the very last uphill he put 20 seconds on me and we finished 1,2. Being that close and not winning was a bummer, but I was super happy how the day went.
Dan and Charles both had clean rides and finished almost at the same time and this time Charles had a smile on his face.
Sunday brought the downhill portion of the race I figured I had a good shot at the overall if I could just get to the bottom with my bike and me in one piece. We went off in 30 second intervals and I was the last guy in our category to start. I gave Dan and I goals at the top, I said he should shoot for under 1 hour and I wanted to go under 55 minutes. Dan had a good run catching and passing a few guys and finishing just over the hour mark. I wound up having a pretty good run with only a couple mistakes, passing at least 10 guys and finishing in 54 minutes, good enough for the win! With my second in XC and first in the DH I was the overall champ!
This weekend was awesome for me in so many ways it was the fulfillment of a dream to win Downieville. I had the best support ever at the races. From shuttling to hand ups to meals and even bike maintenance Daniel and Leslie Cross are rock stars! Thank you so much. The sram booth even replaced my brakes and rotors and hooked Dan up with a new seat post like we were pros and I won a truckload of super cool swag.”
