I was out on a midday training ride on my road bike, when the most unexpected thing occurred. I had completed an ascent and pulled into a driveway to wait for a couple friends to catch-up, as they passed-by, I fell back in behind, pedaling hard as we began the downhill. Suddenly, my left foot popped out of the cleat and lodged firmly between the frame and the back of the front tire – launching me over the bars. I landed on the back of my head and right shoulder, with my Rudy Project “Sterling” helmet taking the brunt of the initial impact.
The crash destroyed an entire kit; bib shorts, jersey, glove, and helmet. The helmet’s inner structure shattered at multiple points (see arrows in photo 2) absorbing the force vectors, while the outer shell held the pieces together in a protective bucket.
I truly believe the only reason I did not incur severe head injury (or worse), is due to the fact the Rudy Project “Sterling” helmet did its job by absorbing and dispersing the impact.
Thank you, Rudy Project, for all of the research and development you put forth to create a top-quality product – your helmets rock!
