As I awoke Sunday morning to the sound of heavy rain I thought to myself this is going to be interesting…. My race was at 2 pm in Auburn and the forecast wasn’t pretty. We loaded up our stuff and left Dans house at 9am. On the way up I texted Dennis who was in the first race of the day, he replies” weathers great , course is super fun!” BTW he also improved on his previous race by finishing 6th a new personnel best, awesome. As we drove in the pouring rain I thought maybe we’ll get lucky…
Charles raced next although he didn’t have his best day he seems to be finding more confidence with each race. Brigitte raced in full costume and finished 7th and seems to have more fun than everyone. By the time we reached Davis we had out run the storm and we were in the clear. We arrived at the venue and the team had a awesome pit set up, by far the nicest at the race! Dan was driving about 70 mph and apparently the storm was traveling around 55, About a half hour after we arrived all hell broke loose and it dumped about 2″ in a hour! Erik, Justin , Dan , Ryan and I all got dressed and warmed up in the shelter of our cars and under the tents. Charles was going to race again but said ” I think I’m good”. We all skipped a pre ride lap and decided to just hit the course blind. As luck would have it the storm blew through and the rain stopped….. But the damage was done. What was once grass was now ether mud or 6″ of running water. And you know what? It was awesome! I had a great race slipping and sliding all over the place , bringing home a win for the home team. Dan thought he was playing it safe by running his single speed but the course was deteriorating so quickly you really needed a gear you could spin , ouch. He wound up 13th.
Ryan and Justin were 4th and Erik 5th in there classes. The course was a swamp when they were through. One of the best things was they had a hot water hose to clean off with after the race that felt great! Also a beer tent with some nice local brews that I got to sample , thanks Dennis!
Sac #5 next Sunday then we have the Bike Monkey Santa Rosa cup the following week. We would like to get some more people out for that one. We are planing to have our pit rocking all three days with BBQ and refreshments so come and race or cheer!
